Bulking and Sampling Committee

Aim:

  • To update Chapter 2 (Sampling) of the ISTA Rules by considering scientific and commercial aspects, as well as regulatory requirements.
  • To revise new and upcoming seed sampling technology and changes to quality assurance systems in seed companies.
  • To increase scientific knowledge about uniformity in seed lots.

Relevance:

  • Sampling is a connection between the seed testing laboratory, the seed company, and the seed certification agency.

The Bulking and Sampling Committee is mainly responsible for updating Chapter 2 of the ISTA International Rules for Seed Testing. Ongoing revision and improvement of the seed sampling rules are required, to take into account new and upcoming seed sampling technology and changes to quality assurance systems in seed companies. In addition, the Committee has the role of increasing scientific knowledge about uniformity in seed lots.

Sampling forms the link between the Orange International Seed Lot Certificate and the specific seed lot it relates to. As such, sampling is a connection between the seed testing laboratory, the seed company and the seed certification agency. The Committee considers scientific and commercial aspects, as well as regulatory requirements when developing new rules or considering changes to the existing rules. Therefore, the Committee has a broad representation in all these areas and is a forum for the fruitful exchange of experience in order to ensure representative seed sampling, so that test results accurately reflect the seed lot from which the sample has been taken.
