Aim of the workshop
The workshop aims to offer both theoretical and practical training for analysts in seed testing laboratories, enhancing their skills in performing Tetrazolium and Germination tests as part of their daily tasks.
Workshop content
The workshop will focus on Germination and Tetrazolium testing across various crops groups, conducted in accordance with current ISTA Rules.
Participants will learn the principles, methodologies, and practical applications of these tests, including hands-on sessions for setting up and analysing germination tests and conducting Tetrazolium tests to assess seed viability.
The training will also cover crop-specific challenges and compliance with ISTA standards, ensuring attendees are equipped to perform accurate and reliable seed testing in their laboratories.
Preliminary Programme
Theoretical discussions and practical evaluations of the following species will be included in the Workshop:
- Agrostis capillaris
- Arachis hypogaea
- Glycine max
- Medicago sativa
- Spinacia oleracea
Differences between the crop group as set out in the ISTA Handbook of Seedling Evaluations will be discussed. The programme will include the quality control requirements for germination and tetrazolium testing.

The participation fee includes all literature and supporting material for the workshop, lunches, coffee breaks and workshop official dinner. It does not include accommodation or meals other than those specified.
The number of participants is a minimum of 20 and restricted to a maximum of 25 participants.
Registration and payment deadline is 3 August 2026
Please note:
For cancellations made before 3 August 2026 registration fees are refundable minus a 50 EUR administration fee.
For cancellations made after 3 August 2026 registration fees are non-refundable.
Accomodation recommendations
A list of accommodation in Oudtshoorn will be provided soon.
Guests may book directly with the hotel and will be responsible for payment of their own room, taxes and incidentals.
