ISTA Workshop on Sampling, Purity and Germination

Workshop Hyderabad

The Telangana State Seed and Organic Certification Authority is looking forward to hosting you at the workshop on seed sampling, purity, and germination to be held in Hyderabad, India in November 2022. The workshop will include lectures, practical exercises, and group work. The workshop is supported by the Government of Telangana and the Indo-German Project.

Aim of the workshop: 

The aim of the workshop is to provide an overview of seed sampling, as well as purity and germination analysis of a range of species, but also to provide a forum where questions relating to seed sampling and testing methodologies can be discussed. 


Workshop content: 

The workshop will be taught through formal lectures, practical work and a series of exercises where participants will form into groups to work on. Topics included in the workshop are 

  • Introduction to seed sampling methods (lectures) 

  • Principles behind seed sampling, sealing bags and labelling (lectures) 

  • Sampling containers, bags, boxes, and dividing samples (practicals) 

  • Dividing samples and validation of dividers (lectures and practicals) 

  • Principles of purity and other seed determination (lectures)  

  • Introduction of PSD 4, 10, 11, 12, 38, 40, and 42 - practical’s on Cajanus cajan,  Glycine max, Gossypium, Helianthus, Solanum/Capsicum, Sorghum, Triticum,  Oryza sativa,  Vigna radiata/Vigna mungo, and Zea mays. 

  • Use of equipment and preparation of the working sample for purity analysis                 

  • Purpose and principles of the germination test 

  • Introduction and practicals on Cajanus cajan, Cicer, Glycine max, Gossypium, Helianthus, Solanum/Capsicum, Sorghum, Triticum, Oryza sativa,  Vigna radiata/Vigna mungo, and Zea mays. 

  • Calculations, tolerances and reporting of the germination results

  • Monday, 21 November 2022: Opening, ISTA Overview and Sampling Lectures 

  • Tuesday, 22 November 2022: Sampling practicals 

  • Wednesday, 23 November 2022: Purity presentations/practicals  

  • Morning Thursday, 24 November 2022: Purity presentations/practicals 

  • Afternoon Thursday, 24 November 2022: Germination presentations/practicals 

  • Friday, 25 November 2022: Germination presentations/practicals, closure 


Participation Fee: 

ISTA Members 550 USD                              
ISTA non-Members 825 USD

The participation fee includes all literature and supporting material for the workshop, lunches and coffee breaks, excursion, workshop dinner and transfer between the workshop venue and hotels (except airport transfer). 
It does not include accommodation or meals other than those specified.  

The number of participants is a minimum of 20 and restricted to a maximum of 25 participants. 

If you would like to attend the workshop please fill in the registration form. An invoice will be sent to you, which has to be paid before the participation confirmation will be generated.

The registration and payment deadline is September 10, 2022.

For cancellations made before August 30, 2022 registration fees are refundable less the USD 50.00 administration fee.   
For cancellations made after August 30, 2022 registration fees are non-refundable.
