Aim of the workshop:

The overall aim of this workshop is to introduce optical technologies in seed evaluation. The participants learn about and practice the use of imaging technologies for seed evaluation. During training sessions and workshop discussions they will acquire insights into the potentials and limitations of how these new methods may have a role in seed evaluation and seed testing.

Language: English (slides and presentations)

Workshop content:

Participants will acquire hands-on experience with multispectral imaging and NIRS used to evaluate seeds, seed surface characteristics, chemical properties etc. There will be training sessions where participants will use commercially available software to build test sessions to distinguish between weeds versus crop seeds, to determine vigour, identify mechanical damage etc.
The workshop includes an afternoon (Wednesday 10th of June) with practical demonstrations of equipment; this session is open for seed analysts, industry, authorities and regulators, and researchers.

Preliminary Programme:

The Programme will include lectures and hands-on exercises on

- Introduction to optical technologies in seed analysis
- Multispectral imaging and potential uses
- Computed seedling image analysis for seed vigor evaluation
- Vigor-S system
- Phenotyping seeds for variety description
- NIR analysis for seed quality traits
- X-ray in seed analysis
- 3D X-ray imaging and Magnetic Resonance Imaging in seed analysis
- Chlorophyll fluorescence in seed and seedling analysis

Demo-Day: the Programme will also include a half-a-day practical demonstration of optical technologies available for seed evaluation.
